MADE EASIER: Planning Before You Plan

By Beth Ling Feb 26, 2026

Designing sustainability does not begin in year three of a plan. It begins before the plan starts. If your organization expects to begin a strategic plan within the next 12 months, preparation should begin now—whether that means scheduling a leadership retreat, engaging your board in early framing conversations, or bringing in outside perspective to sharpen the questions.

Before launching the formal process, take these steps:

  • Name the 3–5 decisions that truly matter.
Planning is about choices, not aspirations. Identifying the hard decisions in advance ensures the process addresses what is necessary, not just what is comfortable.
  • Clarify ownership.
Determine who would likely own each major priority. Planning discussions are more focused when responsibility is visible from the start.
  • Define financial guardrails.
Agree early on what level of investment is realistic. Clear financial parameters keep planning grounded in operational reality.
  • Assess philanthropic readiness.
Consider whether your emerging priorities can be clearly articulated to major donors. Planning and fundraising should move together, not sequentially.
  • Identify one predictable obstacle.
Every organization has a structural constraint—capacity, governance alignment, funding model. Naming it early ensures the plan accounts for it.

Strong planning begins before the first draft. The discipline applied now will determine the clarity of what follows.
