When Everything Feels Loud, Say What Matters

By Rob Bull Oct 02, 2025

October is a noisy time in the nonprofit world. With the government shutdown adding new uncertainty, we’re hearing about funding losses, staff layoffs, shrinking budgets, and declining trust in institutions. And yes—some of it is true. But it’s not the whole story.

Here’s what I know: clarity rises above the noise. Organizations that speak with conviction, stay grounded in their mission, and communicate honestly with their audiences are still making progress. Donors are still giving. Campaigns are still launching. The work still matters.

Some of the organizations we work with—like the Appalachian Mountain Club and The Grand 1894 Opera House in Galveston, Texas—have been around since the 1800s. They’ve weathered wars, recessions, natural disasters, political shifts, and cultural reckonings. What they’ve shown repeatedly is that longevity isn’t about staying safe. It’s about staying visible, mission-driven, and courageous in the ask.

In practice, that means leaning into the essentials: refining your message, empowering your board, and reaching out to donors with purpose, not perfection. Even a simple, clear ask made this month can shift year-end momentum.

Having been a theatre major, I think a lot about voice. About what it means to speak truthfully, to read the room, to communicate with purpose. I’ll be honest—even now, I sometimes worry about saying the wrong thing. But as consultants and nonprofit leaders, our job is to speak the truth with care. So let’s support one another in telling the truth, and respect each other when we don’t agree. That’s how we build trust, raise more money, and move forward.

As you head into the year-end fundraising season, don’t let the noise distract you. Lead with the clarity your donors need and the urgency this moment deserves. Invite your community to be part of the work and to deepen their support—not only as donors, but as partners. And make the ask.
